Why does alcohol sting?

Why does it sting when putting alcohol on a cut?

Alcohol takes lipids out of many cell membranes, killing the cells. It also dissolves many other substances. When this happens to nerve cells, it gives a stinging sensation.

This may sound silly, but does that apply to all cells? I mean, even when we put alcohol on our skin when it's not cut? I guess the answer is yes. And could that be bad? Could exessive alcohol damage our skin?

Also, do you know how it kills the cells or dissolves to many other substances? Has that got to do with it's molecular structure?

Intact skin has many layers of dead cells that protect against many things including alcohol. Leaving alcohol on your skin for a long time will dry out the skin and cause damage. Alcohol kills cells by dehydrating them so much. Water molecules pass across the cell membrane out of the cell into the alcohol.
