Why are some germs good for us?

We usually think of germs such as bacteria as being bad for us, but the bacteria covering our skin can help to protect us.

What was discovered?

Molecules made by the normal bacteria living on the surface of our skin can prevent inflammation (redness and swelling) of the skin after a cut.

How was it discovered?

Using mice and human cell cultures, the molecules involved in preventing inflammation when the skin suface was damaged led to the discovery.

Why is it important?

This is the first evidence for molecules being involved in the "hygeine hypothesis", which tries to explain the increase in allergy and eczma cases in industrialised nations.

Now that the molecules produced by some of the skin's bacteria when an injury occurs has been found, ways to encourage these "good" bacteria (which make the molecule) to grow on our skin can also be found.  This might help to reduce allergies and eczma.
