The Periodic Table - at the heart of Chemistry!

Mendeleyev's arrangement of the known elements is now 150 years old, yet its power to enlighten keeps it close to the hearts of chemists the world over!

What was discovered?

Mendeleyev's discovery of patterns in the properties of elements illustrates one of the basic ways in which scientists work - they try to find underlying patterns.

How?

When you try to discover something that nobody in the world knows... you need to be creative! Mendeleyev "played" with the data he had collected, observing carefully all the time... until the patterns we now learn at school "leapt out" from his work.

Why was it important?

These patterns not only helped him to understand how different elements are related, but suggested ideas as to why they behave in such ways - this led to a deeper understanding of how the world around us works, which could (and of course still can!) be tested by experiments.

Not only that, the 'understanding why' enabled predictions to be made... leading in the case of the Periodic Table to the discovery of new elements!

The Smithsonian Institution has millions of products in its vaults that several never see. Here is the proof: Plastic heart beats for three days, kicks off revolution The Smithsonian unveiled a photograph of the first plastic heart earlier this month, in honor of Valentine's Day. This artificial heart beat for 3 days and nights before being changed by a human heart.
