Molecules can edit memories! The experiments to alter memories by delivering molecules to certain regions of the brain have only been performed in animals, so far... but their applications to humans to help overcome trauma or fight drug addiction open many possibilities for the future of neuroscience.

The molecule of the moment is an enzyme called PKMzeta - it keeps the connections between neurones (nerve cells) open to allow memories to be stored.
At the connections (synapses) between nerve cells (neurones) in the brain, PKMzeta acts like a little memory machine, keeping the learned activity stored.
But if the action of PKMzeta is blocked using another molecule, then the memory is lost!
