Cancer enzyme found

An enzyme that helps cancer spread around the body by preparing the new area so that it is less hostile to invasion by the cancer cells has been found.

[BBC News]

Cancer metastasis is the name for when the cancer cells spread to other organs of the body, and it is the major cause of death in cancer patients.  So to be able to stop metastasis would be a major breakthrough in cancer treatments!

Enzymes are proteins that act as catalysts inside our cells, speeding up chemical reactions so that we can stay alive.

Enzymes therefore control what our cells do and how - read more about enzymes here

The new enzyme that has been found that helps cancer spread around the body is called LOX, which is short for lysyl oxidase

If scientists could find a way to stop LOX doing its job, that might help to stop cancer spreading!

Molecules that stop enzymes working so well are called inhibitors - read more about how inhibitors can work here

Action:

You don't have to look inside someone's body to see enzymes at work... leave an apple which you have cut in half on a table and watch what happens - enzymes working before your very eyes! - read more details about what's happening here!

Acids and bases affect how well enzymes work - you can do experiments to see the effects on apple browning - read more here!
