Birds with satnav

How do homing pigeons find their way? Many have their own version of satnav - find out how molecules can make this happen!

[Telegraph.co.uk]

What was discovered?

Homing pigeons set off for home in many directions, but can find magnetic waves to help them fly in the right direction.

How?

This research investigated over 150 pigeons at three different locations and showed that the correct flight path of pigeons in Frankfurt followed magnetic fields from the release site.

Previous studies have found that magnetic particles in the beaks of the birds act like small compasses.

Why is it important?

For the pigeons, home is very important!  But for us, the fascination is to find out how the pigeons' inbuilt satnav could work using molecules - hundreds of years before we had them in our cars Smile

Action:

Try navigating your own way home using a map and compass... here is an activity sheet to get you started!
