Arsenic-munching bacteria found in lakeMono lake in California is warmed by hot springs which leach out arsenic from the surrounding rock - not a friendly place for life, you might think, but some bacteria can grow very happily in the poisoned waters!

The bacteria which feed on arsenic still use light as an energy source for photosynthesis, but instead of using water, they seem to use arsenic - scientists do not yet know how!
